Accuracy is vital when planning a solar system, but occasionally certain zoning requirements make it difficult to easily calculate the size of the area you're going to need. Solar roof setbacks are one of these requirements.

Setbacks are a zoning regulation that are put in place to keep firefighters safe when traversing roofs that have PV systems installed. However, the requirements aren’t necessarily consistent across the board. Different cities have their own ordinances in place according to their individual fire codes.

The Modsolar Platform takes the guesswork out of setbacks by simplifying the process of calculating the required space with the click of a button—and it’s accurate down to the inch!

Here's how to get the most out of the brand new Apply Setbacks feature:

The Apply Setbacks feature lives on the Map the System page in the Proposal Settings accordion under Regions. After you have drawn an array, simply click in the center of your specified region to activate it.

Setbacks can be applied for arrays with any number of edges, and the setback for each edge may be adjusted individually.

As you can see, the default setback for each edge is 2 feet. Clicking the up and down arrow next to the numbered edges adjusts each respective setback. This allows for different edges to have uniquely defined setbacks. Note that the defined length is measurement of the orange area, not the area defined after applying setbacks. These measurements are very useful when you need to determine the size of the actual roof. Simply subtract your chosen setbacks to get an accurate measurement of the area your panels will cover.

The Apply Setbacks feature not only gives you a visual of what your individual setback requirements will look like, but it now also gives you an accurate measurement of the length of the outermost defined area.
